What do you guys do all day? |
||
| One of the questions we meet the most when
talking to non-cruisers (people that live on land and drive cars) is "What
do you guys do all day?". It comes just after all the Oh and Ah about our
lifestyle. Living on a boat anchored in a bay, how do you spend your day?
What does a typical day look like? I must admit we have asked ourselves this question sometimes. Not so much about what WE do but what do couples that sail without children do all day? The answer is simple. We do all the things normal people do, but it all takes much longer. Instead of working in an office we maintain a boat. At home if you want to wash your clothes you dump a whole lot of clothes into the washing machine. Job done! Here you have to bag it and carry it ashore in the dinghy. Then you take it to the laundry ladies and pick it up the next day. At home if you want to use some electricity you plug in and that's it. On the boat you have to start the generator first. Then the gen set needs to be fed fuel and oil and maintained. If you want to do internet you have to jump into the dinghy and find a place ashore where they offer wireless LAN connections or a cable to connect to. Sometimes this can take the better part of an hour to find.

Maintaining a house is largely a question of slapping on some paint every ten years, changing a light bulb or two and taking out the garbage. Not so on a boat. The merciless sun and the salt sea wears down anything. A boat that moves and shakes and rolls and pitches wears on sails, mechanics and everything else. | |
